As we head towards the end of November, we’re left with only two weeks until the 2018 World’s Strongest Man Hafthor Bjornsson competes in his highly powerlifting meet. Bjornsson will be competing in a meet titled Thor’s Powerlifting Challenge, which will take place during the Iceland Open expo in Laugardalshöll, Reykjavík, Iceland.
In early November, Bjornsson first announced that he’d be competing in a powerlifting meet, and to put it not so mildly, the strength world was set on fire with speculation and hype. We know Bjornsson can deadlift huge weight, and we know his squat is absolutely monstrous, but what about his bench press? This is the lift that has left many scratching their heads wondering what Bjornsson could really do with specific training and prep.
Yesterday, Bjornsson shared an Instagram video that may help start to answer the speculated bench press question. In his latest lifting video, Bjornsson handily presses 235kg/517 lbs with good speed for two doubles.
Now, were the reps completely paused to most powerlifting federation’s standards? Not fully, but in our opinion, the speed off his chest is a good indication that Bjornsson would have no problem pausing this weight for a competition. And unrelated, check out how he wears SBD knee sleeves on his elbows.
And circling back to the statement above about Bjornsson’s squat. Three days ago, he shared a heavy raw squat and knee wraps with 400kg/880 lbs on the bar. Check that out below.
